Teddy Mahood,
Master Sculptor, works with his wife Laurie, who is a Senior
Apprentice under his direction.
Their
carvings and sculptures are strongly influenced by Teddy's
native heritage (his mother
is from the Gitxan Band of
the Tsimshian Nation from Old Town Hazelton, BC) as well as
the West Coast.
Teddy believes that "most everything is either a fin or a
feather", and waves, water and twisted cedar trees are
recurring themes in their art.
However, the most basic
influence that inspires this artistic couple is the grain of
the wood. As they see it, "God gives us a beautiful medium
to work with, we just work to bring it out." |

"The Raven"
In Teddy's
first year of full-time sculpting, "The Raven" was purchased by the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, DC, where it is on permanent
display in the West Coast Native exhibit. |
Teddy and Laurie work mainly
with red cedar and blue pine. Laurie helps with designing
the artwork and does most of the intricate painting and
finishing while Teddy gives final direction suggesting "a
little deeper here, more concave there..." to arrive at a
beautifully sculpted piece from a team effort. |
